conchology and flora paintings

The complex intricacies, linear structure, and translucency of the subject's surface are the inspiration for Gregory's shell paintings. HIs skills in rendering fine detail and the intricacies of organic geometry are demonstrated in this series.

The aesthetic side of chonocology engages with the intricate detailed surfaces and artless contours which recall both organic elusiveness and technological precision.

Gregory is particularly intrigued by the geometric patterns noted by mathematicians in their discussions of shell formation as logarithmic spirals specified by each species' genetic code. In addition, this series is inspired by the infinite organic permutations of each individual shell he approaches, as well as the shell's textures, colours, and contours.

Gregory has recently come back to painting as a major creative endeavor after approximately ten years. With his move to Hawai'i, from Onatrio, Gregory found himself once again inspired to return to the visual arts.

Conchologists of America will be featuring an article on Gregory's paintings. American Conchologist is a quarterly journal of the Conchologists of America.
